Who We Are

Veronica Tyson-Strait Garden Design is a small design, installation and maintenance company based in New York City. We create simple, beautiful green spaces with a focus on interesting and suitable plant materials. Whenever possible we include native plants and create habitat for butterflies, birds and bees. No space is too small to add beauty, enhance the environment and improve the quality of life, whether it be a backyard, rooftop, terrace, window box or tree pit. We encourage composting, organic fertilizing, reuse of materials and use of products produced under sustainable practice codes.

About The Designer

Veronica Tyson-Strait is the owner and principal designer. She graduated from The Cooper Union School of Art with a BFA, majoring in painting and photography. Veronica has been passionate about plants and gardening for most of her life having grown up in the Caribbean with a mother known for her gardens of speckled orchids, papaws, avocados, pineapples and passionfruit alongside velvety begonias, heliconias and bougainvillea. As a teenager she fell in love with bamboo and teak and fields of tall sugar cane. Coupled with an eye for detail and drawing skills, nature and her love of plants lead to representational and abstract painting and later to designing with and preserving botanical specimens.

While working as a producer at Young & Rubicam Veronica joined the Fern Society at the New York Botanical Gardens to better identify the many ferns found growing on her 14-acre property in Western Massachusetts. Visits to the gardens lead to studies in botany, floral design and garden design. She is a graduate of both the school of Professional Horticulture and the School of Landscape Design at NYBG.
